Me and Mrs Jones by Billy Paul

I already have a grudge against Gamble and Huff for being the duo behind The O'Jays' 'Backstabbers' (see earlier rant), but it wasn't until I looked it up that I realised that they are responsible for this too. I think a lot of people think 'Me and Mrs Jones' is romantic and sensual, a la Marvin Gaye, but I just think it's a bit silly. He's telling everyone exactly where and when he and Mrs Jones have their clandestine lovers' trysts, so it's only a matter of time before Mr Jones gets wind of it and springs them. And even if he doesn't, meeting in the same time and place isn't really very clever - I bet the owner of that cafe and all of his staff know exactly what's going on. Blackmail is on the cards. I also find it very hard to take seriously because whenever I hear it I think about my Year 8 art teacher, Mrs Jones, who was almost the last person anyone would want to have an affair with. But being serious for a moment and focusing on the 'music', I mainly dislike this song because of Mr Paul's tendency to break into 'scat', which is never a good idea in any context, and to improv various repetitious lines. We've got the message after the first verse, thanks.

Crap lyrics: They don't actually look bad on paper - it's when Billy is let loose on them that the damage is done.

Verdict: Is there a Mr Paul here? There's a Mr Jones who wants to speak to you....
